Pirate Papa: A Journal of Anarcho-Green D(o).I(t).Y(ourself). Parenting

And now our little world is filled with papa blogs, mama zines, alternative child rearing tactical manuals, a plethora of organic ideas, food and diapers. I wonder, will we remember the beginnings of our humble remaking of the world? Pirate Papa seeks to share a small sliver of life experience with those interested souls seeking advice, common ground, friendly words. Let us redefine our selves, and in so doing redefine the rules and relationships around us.

Shameless Self-Promotion

So I'm going to go ahead and be shameless 'cause I'm poor and trying to fashion an alternative lifestyle in congruence with our Capitalist realm. I sell books online for Earthlight Books (my father's shop) in Walla Walla. If you like what you see on this site and believe in what I'm doing and would like to help feed my beautiful girls and like to read books, why not buy your books straight from Pirate Papa? Order by e-mail and get 10% off the listed price. Now you can visit my rather clandestine Ebay store Last Earth Distro,(which has already been censored to the tune of 40 titles removed a little while back).I do special orders and rare book searches as well. earthlightbooks(at)gmail.com - My friends and I also own lAst wOrd bOOks and the OlYmpIA zInE lIbrAry in Olympia, Washington. Our little radicalanarchist store has been around since May of 2002 and has become a staple of the community and a bridge between worlds.

I scoured the internet for days, turning up only vague message-board references and a few scant articles. Bare bones to be sure. But there were thousands of mama 'zines and resources for young mothers, articles, essays, books, talk shows. What about the fathers? What about the single dads and creating some community and resources for them? What about the punk papas, the anarcho-green papas, the socialist papas, the homosexual papas, the papas who never get to see their kids because of work or custody battles or some other barrier thrown up by a society willing to focus only on the symptoms and not the root causes of its problems? What about the papas who no one ever helped? Where are our shelves upon shelves of books? Where are our homemade 'zines? Where are our legions of social workers? I always hear everyone talk about how rough young mothers have it rough and it's true; but with 190,000 stay-at-home dads and an ever increasing number of single fathers, with the growing acceptance of gay fathers and the ever-changing dynamics of the 21st century family we cannot be taken for granted much longer. Our society is geared towards creating more young mothers than it is young fathers and the pieces will only start clicking into place when we stop effectively ignoring half of the equation and start fostering a truly egalitarian system of parental education in this "great nation." Today things are different than a mere two years ago, now I have a news aggregator and a blogroll of dozens of papa blogs and resources for the burgeoning green parent, online parent zines and blogs are the new craze in select circuits and I sit and wonder if anyone else realizes the power we are building, the far-reaching ripple effect of our quiet revolution.

Comments and e-mails are appreciated, the static of life without feedback becomes empty noise. How come people only comment on the dark dreary stuff? And why are almost all the comments from this country when I get hits from all over? I wanna hear from you non-u.s. citizens dammit.

Arrrrrgh! Avast ye scurly scallywags, this be Lyli & Scarleht. We abide oustide o' Shelton, Washington at the spiralest-most inside tip of the glorious Sound of Puget. Hungry Hollow Farm has been 'ere since 1888 but we hav'n't. We've only been 'ere since June of '04, on the farm since July '05. We hang out with our papa half the week and redefine the societal paradigms that have shaped our patriarchal, war-mongering, greedy world, read tons of books, wreak havoc in the yard, go for walks in the woods and canoe-trips and generally kick ass. Oh, and if you were curious, a Pirate Papa is any father who struggles against those accepted and ruthlessly enforced norms on any miniscule level of the spectrum; it's any counter-culture papa caught in the mainstream who fights back against what the 'greater good' is telling them to do and forges their own path through the wilderness of fatherhood in a papaphobic sea of guilt and past mistakes; really it's any papa who cares about their kids, their partner and themselves more than what someone else thinks of their decisions and lifestyle. Life can be grand if you invest the time to make it so. Just sit back and do whatever it is the moment calls for. And let's not be so lonely, eh? How about a little father's forum?
What do you do as a parent when the vast majority of other parents either don't get it or don't care? What do you do when your society knowingly injects poisons into everything under the sun? What do you do when finding alternatives is so labor-intensive? Personally I dropped out of society and made myself a life less ordinary. But I still like the real ones, the people whose eyes just reach out and wrap themselves around your soul. No matter how far apart we may be, slowly, slowly we band together with like-minded folks. We form a crew. We set sail for new lands and only look back to ensure the same mistakes are not again made. We are everywhere. Biding our time. Investing our time. Saving our time.
